You have the power

It’s a little known fact that body fat isn’t just sitting there as silent padding. It’s actually a dynamic entity, making and releasing a whole array of chemical messengers.

Some of these include factors that promote inflammation and blood clotting, as well as those that contract blood vessels, causing a rise in blood pressure. >

Is Your Brain Keeping You Fat?

Recent research is showing that dieters have a ‘new’ enemy to contend with - the brain.

Scientists now claim that dieters often struggle to shed the kilos because their brains are secretly working against them. >

Is a Virus Keeping You Overweight?

Researchers have found that increased fat stores may be linked to the presence of viruses.

Meaning that any eating programme can ultimately fail if weight gain is linked to the presence of viruses that promote the storage of fat. >

Diet Sodas Make You Fat

Researchers have found that diet drinks, including diet sodas, diet tea, energy drinks, sports drinks, and flavoured waters, can actually make you fat.

As the tongue senses something sweet, it programmes the brain to set in motion a series of biochemical events called the Cephalic Phase Insulin Response (CPIR). >

Are You Really Fat?

The simplest way to check to see if you are overweight, is to run a tape measure around your belly – right at the belly button.

Research has determined that health risks increase significantly for certain diseases above certain measurements.

Men with belly measurements:

    > above 94 cms (37” inchs) are clinically overweight
    > above 102 cms (40 inchs) are clinically obese

Women with belly measurements:

    > above 84 cms (33 inchs) are clinically overweight
    > above 88 cms (35 inchs) are clinically obese

So wrap a measuring tape around your middle and see how you fare.

Whether you are classified as “overweight” or “obese” according to your BMI—or even if you’re in the “normal” range—a waist size at or above these points is associated with a higher risk for many diseases.

Higher Risk Of Disease

Because being overweight is not just a cosmetic problem.

It's a downright health hazard.

Someone who is 40% overweight is twice as likely to die prematurely.

This is because being overweight or obese can be linked to serious medical conditions, including:

    > Heart diseases and stroke
    > High blood pressure
    > Diabetes
    > Cancers
    > Gallbladder disease and gallstones
    > Liver disease
    > Irregular menstrual periods
    > Osteoarthritis
    > Gout
    > Breathing problems such as sleep apnea and asthma

Doctors generally agree that the more overweight a person is, the more likely they are to have health problems.
